The Associated Press, often called the AP, is a huge news agency.

It is a not-for-profit group based in New York City. This means it works to share news rather than just making money. The AP works as a cooperative. This is a way of organizing where the members own and run the group. They send news reports to many different places. These include daily newspapers and radio or television stations. Today, more than 1,300 newspapers and broadcasters use their news.

How does the AP get news to so many people? It works through a massive network of news bureaus. The AP has 235 bureaus located in 94 different countries. They write their reports in English, Spanish, and Arabic. In the past, they used special tools to send news faster. In 1914, they used a machine called a teletype. This sent words directly to printers using telegraph wires. In 1935, they started a service called Wirephoto. This allowed them to send news photographs over telephone lines on the same day they were taken.

The story of the AP began a long time ago. In May 1846, five newspapers in New York City joined together. They wanted to share the cost of sending news about the Mexican-American War. A man named Moses Yale Beach helped organize this group. It was first called the New York Associated Press. Later, a group in Illinois called the Western Associated Press formed in 1862. After some legal changes, the AP moved its main office from Chicago to New York City. This move happened because New York had better laws for cooperatives.

The AP has a very long history of important work. They have won 59 Pulitzer Prizes since the awards began in 1917. A total of 36 of those prizes were for photography. The agency has also grown into many different areas. They started sending news to radio stations in 1941. In 1994, they created APTV to gather video news from around the world. They even launched a radio network in 1974. By 2016, the news they collected reached a huge number of people across the globe.

You might see the AP's work every single day. Their news stories often appear on websites like Yahoo! or MSN. Many people visit the AP website more than 128 million times each month. This makes it one of the top 10 news websites in the United States. They also provide important information like election polls and results. They even help track sports through NCAA polls. Whether you are reading a paper or watching a screen, the AP is often there.
