People use this time to pray, think, or meditate. Some retreats happen in quiet places like a monastery. Others might be in a group at a retreat center.

Many different faiths use retreats. In Buddhism, retreats help people focus. Some monks sit in silence to gain insight. In the Nyingma school, some people even practice in the dark.

In Christianity, retreats help people feel closer to God. St. Ignatius of Loyola helped make this practice popular. He wrote a guide called the Spiritual Exercises. Some Christians go to camp meetings in nature to pray and sing.

Sufis also use retreats. They call this practice khalwa, which means being alone. A Sufi might stay alone for forty days. They may repeat the name of God to remember Him. This is a way to seek a deep connection with the Divine.
