He was born on August 24, 1922, in New Brunswick. His father was a lawyer named Dominic Lévesque. After his father died, René grew up in Quebec. He studied law at Université Laval. However, he left school in 1943. He decided he wanted to write instead of practice law.

He began working in radio and news writing. This was the start of a long career in media.

During World War II, Lévesque worked as a war correspondent. He worked for the U.S. Army in Europe. He reported from London while it was being bombed. He also traveled with troops through France and Germany. Later, he worked for the CBC. He was a well-known host on a show called Point de Mire. He covered big news like the 1957 strike in Murdochville. This strike helped change labor laws in Quebec. He even faced arrest during a protest in 1959.

Lévesque soon moved from news into politics. He joined the Liberal Party in 1960. He served as a minister for natural resources. During this time, he helped make Hydro-Québec a huge company. This was part of a big change called the Quiet Revolution. Eventually, he wanted Quebec to be independent from Canada. He left the Liberal Party because of this goal. In 1968, he helped found the Parti Québécois. He wanted to reach "normal people" with his ideas.

He passed the Quebec Charter of the French Language. This law was known as Bill 101. It helped make French the main language for work and school. He also made rules to stop unfairness in society. His government was the first to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. He also made laws to limit how much money companies could give to political parties.

Lévesque faced many hard jobs as a leader. In 1980, he held a referendum to ask about independence. Most people voted no, but he remained hopeful. He led his party to another win in 1981. He worked on the Canadian constitution during his second term. This was a very difficult time for many leaders. He stepped down from leading his party in 1985. He passed away on November 1, 1987. His life changed the history of Quebec forever.
