His parents were a plantation manager and a seamstress. As a young man, he traveled far to study. He first went to Switzerland to study theology. Later, he moved to England to study law at King's College London. He graduated in 1957 and worked as a barrister for four years. These years abroad helped shape his ideas about how a country should work.

When René returned home in 1964, he wanted to help his people. He saw that things were not fair under British rule. He started a newspaper called The People to share his ideas. He also helped lead a group called the Seychelles People's United Party. This group wanted the islands to be independent from Britain. In 1976, the Seychelles finally became a republic. At that time, James Mancham became the first president. René served as the nation's second Prime Minister.

In 1977, the government changed in a sudden way. While President Mancham was traveling in London, a coup occurred. A coup is when a group takes control of a government by force. Supporters of René seized important places on the island of Mahé. There was some fighting at a police station during this time. Sadly, four people lost their lives during the conflict. René became the president on 5 June 1977. He stayed in this role for many years until 2004.

René's leadership brought many big changes to the Seychelles. His party was the only legal one for a long time. This meant he had a lot of power over the government. He used this power to start many social programs. He worked to make sure everyone could go to school. He also helped make sure people could get healthcare. Because of these programs, the Seychelles became very developed. It had high literacy rates and a good standard of living.

René also helped the Seychelles connect with the rest of the world. He built strong ties with many different nations. He worked closely with India and China to help his country grow. He also had links with the Soviet Union and North Korea. These relationships helped with building schools and housing projects. He wanted to make sure the Seychelles was strong on its own. Even though he had many different types of partners, he focused on his home.
