Remote sensing

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Remote sensing is a way to learn about things from far away. You do not have to touch an object to study it. This is different from on-site observation where you must be right there.

Scientists use these tools to study Earth and other planets. It helps us see the surface, the air, and even the oceans. This method is very useful for many different jobs. It can help with geography, weather, and even protecting the environment.

There are two main ways this technology works. The first way is called passive remote sensing. These sensors gather radiation that is already there. Most of the time, they catch reflected sunlight.

This is a lot like how a regular camera works. The second way is called active remote sensing. In this way, a sensor sends out its own signal. The signal hits an object and then bounces back.

Tools like RADAR and LiDAR use this method to find the location and speed of things.

People have used these tools for a long time to solve problems. During the Cold War, military groups used it to watch dangerous borders.

This allowed them to stay at a safe distance. In the 1970s, the Landsat program began using satellites to map the Earth.

Scientists like Janet Franklin and Ruth DeFries have used this to study nature. These tools help us see changes in the world without disturbing anything.

There are many specific tools used in science today. LiDAR uses lasers to measure how tall objects are on the ground.

It can even find different chemicals in the air. Radiometers are used to catch light and heat. They can even monitor volcanic eruptions from space. Some tools use sound, like sonar, to see underwater. Other tools use gravity to find things deep under the seafloor.

Remote sensing connects to many parts of our daily lives. It helps farmers check on their crops and healthy plants. It can also help us watch for oil spills in the ocean. We use it to track big weather patterns like El Niño. It even helps us find minerals like copper or uranium. By using satellites and planes, we can keep our planet safe and healthy.
