A reflecting telescope uses mirrors to see.

These mirrors are curved. They catch light from far away. The light bounces off the mirror to make an image. Isaac Newton made the first working version in 1668.

His design used a metal mirror. Long ago, mirrors were made of a metal called speculum. These metal mirrors had some problems. They only reflected part of the light. They could also tarnish or rust.

Today, we use better ways to make mirrors. Most use glass with a thin layer of silver or aluminum.

This helps them catch much more light. Reflectors are great for big science. A lens can only be about one meter wide. If it is too big, it will sag from gravity. Mirrors can be much larger. Some mirrors are over 10 meters wide! Because they use mirrors, they do not have chromatic aberration. This is a problem where colors look blurry. Most big research telescopes use this design. Even the Hubble Space Telescope is a reflector.
