James Gregory was a thinker from Scotland. In 1663, he wrote down a new plan for a telescope.

This tool is called a Gregorian telescope. It uses two curved mirrors to see things far away. The first mirror is called the primary mirror. It catches light and brings it to a focus. This means the light rays meet at one spot. Next, a second mirror bounces the light back. This second mirror is called a secondary mirror. The light goes through a hole in the middle of the first mirror. This lets the person look through an eyepiece at the bottom.

This design makes the image look right-side up. This makes it good for looking at things on Earth. It can also help us look at the sun. A special part called a field stop can block extra light. This keeps heat away from the mirrors.

Many big tools use this way to see. Some use it to study radio waves from space. Others use it to look at the sun. Many large telescopes still use this clever design today.
