An octant is a tool used for navigation.

Sailors use it to find their way at sea. The name comes from the Latin word for an eighth part of a circle. This is because the tool's frame is one-eighth of a circle.

An octant uses mirrors to help a sailor see. It lets them see two things at the same time. One mirror shows the horizon, which is where the sea meets the sky. The other mirror shows a star or the sun.

By moving an index arm, the sailor can line up both objects in one view. This makes it easy to measure the angle between them.

This tool was very helpful on rocking ships. As the ship moves, the star and the horizon seem to move together. This makes it much easier to get a good reading.

Some octants even had small shades. These shades help a sailor look at the bright sun without hurting their eyes. This means the tool works during the day and at night.
