It is a faint group. This means it is hard to see. Its name means the eighth part of a circle. It is named after an octant. An octant is a tool used for travel.

A man named Nicolas Louis de Lacaille made this name in 1752. He was a French star expert. He saw almost 10,000 stars in the south.

One very important spot is in Octans. The south celestial pole is there. This is the south pole of the sky. The star Sigma Octantis is near this spot. It is called the southern pole star. It is quite dim. This makes it hard to use for travel.

There are many other things to find here. Some stars have planets. For example, the star Nu Octantis has a planet. We also see far away things. NGC 7098 is a barred spiral galaxy. This is a huge group of stars. It is 95 million light-years away from us.
