John Dobson made this design in 1965. He wanted to help people see the stars. He used cheap parts to make them. He used plywood and even paper tubes.

These tubes are used to pour concrete in building. This makes the telescope light and easy to move.

Most telescopes are very heavy and complex. A Dobsonian uses an altazimuth mount. This is a simple way to move the tube. You can move it up and down or side to side. You only need your hands to move it.

The mount uses seven small blocks to stay steady. These blocks are made of Teflon. Teflon is a smooth material. This helps the telescope slide easily.

These telescopes are great for seeing dim things. We call these deep-sky objects. They include nebulae and galaxies.

These objects need a lot of light. A large mirror helps gather that light. This design lets people build very large mirrors for a low cost. It is a great tool for star lovers.
