The red-winged blackbird is a very common bird found across North and Central America.

These birds live in many places, from Alaska down to Guatemala. Some people believe they are the most abundant land bird in North America. In peak years, there may be more than 250 million breeding pairs. During the winter, they might fly as far north as British Columbia. Some huge flocks can have more than one million birds in a single group.

Males and females look very different from each other. This is called sexual dimorphism.

The male is mostly black with bright red shoulder patches called epaulets. He also has a pale yellow stripe on his wing. The female is much smaller and is a dark brown color.

Female Red-winged Blackbird

She often has white and dark patterns on her feathers. Males are about 50% heavier than the females. This difference in size happens because of sexual selection.

Those bright red spots on the male's wings serve a special purpose. They help the male defend his territory from other males.

In an experiment, males with black-dyed spots lost most of their territory. This shows that the red color is vital for keeping rivals away. The birds also need to eat to stay healthy. Most of their diet comes from eating seeds and insects.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1766. Later, Louis Pierre Vieillot moved them into the genus Agelaius in 1816. The name Agelaius comes from an ancient Greek word for "gregarious." This word describes how these birds like to live in groups. There are between 20 and 24 different subspecies of these birds. Some live in California, while others live in Mexico or the Caribbean.

The red color in the feathers comes from special things called carotenoids.

The birds use two types of these, called astaxanthin and canthaxanthin, to make red. They also have yellow pigments like lutein in their feathers. These colors are very unusual because they work with melanin. Melanin is the same dark pigment that makes hair or skin dark. In the yellow wing bars, the melanin levels are very high. It is a complex way for a bird to show its colors.
