Red-winged blackbird

The red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) is a common passerine bird. It is a member of the Icteridae family. This family includes many American blackbirds. These birds are found throughout most of North America and much of Central America.

Some researchers believe this is the most abundant land bird in North America. During peak years, there may be more than 250 million breeding pairs. Wintering flocks can be incredibly large. Some loose groups can exceed one million birds in a single flock.

These birds show strong sexual dimorphism. This means males and females look very different. The male is mostly black. He has bright red shoulder patches called epaulets. He also has a pale yellow wing bar. The female is a nondescript dark brown. She is much smaller than the male.

Size differences between the sexes are significant. Males are about 50% heavier than females. They are also 20% larger in linear dimensions. Their wings are roughly 20% longer than female wings. This size difference is likely due to sexual selection.

The red epaulets serve a vital role in territory defense. Males use these markings to chase away rivals. In one experiment, researchers dyed the red spots black. About 64% of those males lost their territories. This shows how important the color is for social competition.

The red color comes from specific pigments called carotenoids. The birds use two keto-carotenoids called astaxanthin and canthaxanthin. These are synthesized by the birds themselves. They also have yellow dietary pigments like lutein and zeaxanthin.

This coloring system is quite unusual. The red feathers also contain high amounts of melanin. Melanin is a dark pigment. In these red spots, eumelanin makes up 83% of the total melanin. The yellow wing bars also have high concentrations of pheomelanin. This mix of pigments is rare in ornamental plumage.

History shows how scientists have classified these birds. Carl Linnaeus formally described the species in 1766. He originally named it Oriolus phoeniceus. Later, Louis Pierre Vieillot moved it to the genus Agelaius in 1816. The name Agelaius comes from an Ancient Greek word. It means "gregarious," which describes their tendency to live in groups.

There are many different subspecies of the red-winged blackbird. Scientists recognize between 20 and 24 subspecies. They vary by location and appearance. For example, the A. p. gubernator lives on the Mexican Plateau. In this group, females have very little veining on their feathers. Other subspecies like A. p. californicus live in California.

The red-winged blackbird is closely related to other species. It is a sister species to the red-shouldered blackbird of Cuba. It is also related to the tricolored blackbird of the Pacific coast. These relationships help scientists understand how birds evolve in different regions.
