It was started in 1922. DeWitt Wallace and his wife, Lila Bell Wallace, founded it. They began in a basement in New York. Their big idea was to collect great stories. They took parts from many different magazines. Then they rewrote them into one book. This made a magazine that was easy to read.

The magazine is quite small. Its pages are about half the size of most magazines. This made it easy to carry. In 2005, the company used a slogan. It said, "America in your pocket." Later, they changed the slogan to "Life well shared."

Today, the magazine is very big. It reaches many people in over 70 countries. It is printed in 21 different languages.
