His early naval career involved many different types of ships. He served on the battleship USS Alabama during the Great White Fleet's world cruise. He later commanded several destroyers and the battleship USS Mississippi. During World War I, he worked at the New York Naval Shipyard. He also held assignments in London and Edinburgh. In 1924, he served in Europe during tensions between Greece and Turkey. For his service there, the Greek government awarded him the Gold Cross of the Order of the Savior.

Spruance was known for his calm and professional manner on a ship's bridge. He demanded that all orders be clear and concise. He did not enjoy unnecessary chatter during operations. This steady personality earned him the nickname "electric brain." People trusted him because he remained composed even during extreme crises. This trait became vital during the intense fighting of World War II.

In May 1942, U.S. intelligence learned of a Japanese plan to invade Midway Island. Admiral Chester Nimitz, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, prepared to intercept them. Admiral William F. Halsey was unable to lead due to illness. Consequently, Spruance was chosen to command Task Force 16. This task force included the aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and USS Hornet.

The Battle of Midway began on June 4, 1942. Spruance faced a difficult tactical situation. He had to decide when to launch his aircraft against the Japanese fleet. He chose to launch a strike immediately to catch the enemy carriers while they were vulnerable. He also ordered his planes to fly directly to targets without waiting to form large groups. This was a significant gamble that required great confidence.

Spruance's tactical decisions led to a major victory. American dive bombers attacked the Japanese carriers while they were unprepared. The U.S. Navy successfully sank four Japanese fleet carriers. The Japanese lost the carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryū. The U.S. lost the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown during the engagement. This battle is considered a turning point in the Pacific War. It allowed the U.S. Navy to reach parity in the naval air war.

For his superb performance, Spruance received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.
