This elite rank was also held by William Leahy, Ernest J. King, and Chester W. Nimitz. Halsey was born on October 30, 1882, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. His father, William F. Halsey, was a Navy Captain.

His ancestors emigrated from England to New England in the early 1600s. Halsey attended the Pingry School before entering the United States Naval Academy in 1900. He was a talented athlete and played football as a fullback.

Halsey's early career involved serving on many different types of vessels. He sailed with the Great White Fleet from 1907 to 1909. During this time, he witnessed a tragic accident on a battleship. A powder charge ignited and caused a fire that killed 31 sailors.

This event left Halsey with a lasting dread of the 13th day of every month. Later, he specialized in torpedo boats and destroyers. During World War I, he commanded destroyers to protect convoys from German U-boats. This service earned him the Navy Cross.

In 1934, Admiral Ernest King offered him command of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. Halsey chose to complete the full 12-week Naval Aviator course. He wanted to fly the planes himself rather than just observing.

On May 15, 1935, he earned his wings at age 52. This made him the oldest person to do so in Navy history. He believed that aircraft carriers would become the primary offensive weapons in future naval warfare. This was a shift from the traditional focus on battleship gun lines.

When World War II began in the Pacific, Halsey became a key leader.

He commanded task forces that conducted raids against Japanese-held targets. In late 1941, he was ordered to reinforce Wake Island with aircraft. While his ship, the USS Enterprise, was at sea, the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred.

Following the attack, Halsey was named commander of all ships at sea. He was an aggressive leader who used a "hit hard, hit fast, hit often" approach. He led raids against the Gilbert and Marshall islands and participated in the Doolittle Raid. This raid struck the Japanese Home Islands and boosted American morale.

Halsey's leadership extended to the South Pacific theater. He served as the commander of the South Pacific Area during the Battle for Guadalcanal.

He also led forces during the fighting up the Solomon chain from 1942 to 1945. In 1943, he was appointed commander of the Third Fleet. He held this position through the end of the war. One of his most significant actions was participating in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. This was the largest naval battle in history.

His energy and demand for results defined his command style.

Despite his success, the stress of command took a physical toll on Halsey. During his intense operations in 1942, he suffered from severe psoriasis. The condition caused intense itching and made sleeping nearly impossible.

He became gaunt and lost significant weight. Because of this, he was ordered to a hospital in Hawaii. This occurred just before the critical Battle of Midway. Admiral Chester Nimitz had to appoint Rear Admiral Raymond Spruance to lead instead.
