The story follows an elderly warlord named Hidetora Ichimonji. He lived during the Sengoku period in Japan. Hidetora decides to divide his kingdom among his three sons. His eldest son is named Taro. His other two sons are Jiro and Saburo. Things go wrong when the sons turn against their father. Saburo is sent away after he criticizes his father. Eventually, the family is torn apart by fighting and sadness.

Making this movie was a huge job for the crew. Kurosawa spent ten years planning every single shot. He did this by making paintings called storyboards. These paintings showed exactly how the movie should look. The film was a big project between Japan and France. It used many real locations like Mount Aso. This is the largest active volcano in Japan. The crew even built a real castle near Mount Fuji. They burned this custom castle down for a scene.

There were many amazing details in the production. Master tailors worked for over two years on the clothes. They handmade 1,400 uniforms and suits of armor. The movie also used 200 horses for the scenes. The music was composed by Toru Takemitsu. It was inspired by the music of Gustav Mahler. Costume designer Emi Wada won an Academy Award for her work. Kurosawa also received a nomination for Best Director. This was his only nomination for that award.

Ran is a very important part of film history. It was one of the most expensive Japanese films ever made. Kurosawa used this movie to show his great skill. He often used three cameras at once to film. This helped him get different angles of the action. The film shows how stories can change across cultures. It mixes a famous English play with Japanese history. This makes the movie feel both new and very old.
