It was directed by Akira Kurosawa. The story is a big drama. It is based on a play by William Shakespeare. The play is called King Lear. The movie also uses old Japanese legends.

The story follows an old leader named Hidetora. He is a warlord from the Sengoku period. He decides to give his land to his three sons. But his sons do not stay loyal. They fight each other and their father. This makes the story very sad and intense.

Making this movie took a lot of work. Kurosawa spent ten years making paintings for it. These paintings are called storyboards. They show how every shot should look. The film uses very bright colors. It also has beautiful clothes. Master tailors spent two years making 1,400 suits and armors by hand. The crew even built a real castle near Mount Fuji. They burned it down for a scene in the movie. Many people think Ran is one of the greatest films ever made.
