It was directed by Akira Kurosawa. The movie tells a story about a man named Kanji Watanabe. He has worked in a city office for thirty years. His job is very dull and repetitive.

Watanabe finds out he has stomach cancer. He learns he has less than one year to live. He wants to find a way to make his life meaningful. At first, he tries to find joy in the nightlife of Tokyo. He even sings a sad song called "Gondola no Uta." This song means "Life is Brief."

Later, he meets a young worker named Toyo. She is very happy and loves her job. Her joy inspires Watanabe to take action. He decides to build a playground for children. He must work hard to fight through slow office rules to finish it.

In the end, Watanabe dies. People remember him for the park he made. One famous scene shows him sitting on a swing in the snow. He sings his song with peace in his heart. Many people think this is one of the greatest films ever made.
