sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Ralf Schumann is a famous German sport shooter. He is a master of the 25 metre rapid fire pistol. This sport requires great skill and speed. He is one of the most decorated shooters ever. Ralf won three Olympic gold medals in this single event. He also won two silver medals. This makes him very successful in Olympic history.

Shooting at this level is a very hard job. In the rapid fire event, shooters must hit targets quickly. Sometimes they must shoot in a four-second final. Ralf was very good at these fast rounds. He even held several world records for his scores. He set a record of 597 points in 1995. He matched that high score again in 2000. Later, he set a new record after rule changes.

His journey began many years ago in Germany. Ralf was born in Meissen in 1962. He first took up pistol shooting in 1977. He later trained in Suhl, which is in Thuringia. He was even named athlete of the year there. For much of his career, he worked as a mechanic. His job was very helpful for his sport. They gave him three months of paid leave each year. This time allowed him to train for big contests.

Ralf competed in seven Olympic Games in a row. This started in 1988 and ended in 2012. That is a new record for a German athlete. He won his first gold in 1992. He won his second gold in 1996. His third gold medal came in 2004. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he finished in fifth place. He did not let that stop his success. He kept competing at the highest level for a long time.

Sport can be a family affair for some. Ralf's wife, Anke Völker-Schumann, is also a shooter. They both competed in the Olympics together. They went to the games in 1988, 1996, and 2000. Ralf also helped make the tools of his trade. He designed a custom .22 caliber pistol. An Italian company called Pardini sells his design. This shows how much he knows about his equipment.
