His father was a goldsmith who worked with gold and silver. Ragnar learned this trade too. But he chose a different path. He wanted to use math to study money.

He helped turn economics into a science. He used math and facts to explain how money works. He made up new words for his ideas. He gave us the word "econometrics." This is the use of math to study economic systems. He also gave us the words "microeconomics" and "macroeconomics."

In 1933, he made a model to study business cycles. A business cycle is how the economy changes over time. For this work, he won a Nobel Prize in 1969. He shared this prize with Jan Tinbergen.

During a war, Ragnar was arrested by Nazi Germany. He was held in several camps for a year. After the war, he continued his work. He stayed at the University of Oslo until he retired. He also loved to keep bees. He even studied the science of bees as a hobby.
