Raging Bull is a 1980 American biographical sports drama film. It was directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin. The movie tells the life story of Jake LaMotta. LaMotta was a real-life middleweight boxing champion. The film focuses on his professional boxing career and his turbulent personal life. It explores how his intense rage and jealousy affected his relationships. Today, many people consider it one of the greatest films ever produced.

The production of the film involved a very specific visual process. Scorsese chose to film the entire movie in black and white. One reason was to ensure historical accuracy regarding colors. For example, boxing gloves in that era were typically maroon, oxblood, or black. Using color film might have made those colors look incorrect. Scorsese also wanted to avoid the issue of fading color film stock. He used black and white to distinguish the film from other movies of that time.

To make the boxing scenes feel real, Scorsese studied the sport closely. He attended several matches at Madison Square Garden for research. He noticed small, essential details like the use of a blood sponge. He also observed how blood would appear on the ring ropes. These details were then incorporated into the film's choreography. Each boxing scene was designed with a specific visual style in mind. This helped the audience feel the intensity of the matches.

The development of the screenplay was a complex, multi-step process. It began when Robert De Niro read LaMotta's 1970 memoir, Raging Bull: My Story. De Niro was fascinated by the character and showed the book to Scorsese. Initially, Mardik Martin began writing the first screenplay. However, Paul Schrader was later brought in to perform a major rewrite. Schrader added the character of Joey, Jake's brother, to the story. Scorsese and De Niro also spent two and a half weeks on the island of Saint Martin rebuilding the content. They made significant changes to the plot to improve the film's quality.

Casting played a major role in the film's success. Scorsese often cast actors who were new to the profession. Robert De Niro played the lead role of Jake LaMotta. To prepare, De Niro gained weight to accurately portray LaMotta in his later years. The supporting cast included Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty. Both actors were relatively unknown before they worked on this project. Pesci actually recommended Moriarty for her role. Their performances helped bring the intense drama to life.

The film had a budget of $18 million. It earned approximately $23.4 million at the box office, which was considered a lukewarm result. Critics gave the film mixed reviews.
