He is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation. His work spans many different styles of film, from intense crime dramas to lighthearted comedies. Beyond acting, he is a restaurateur and a leader in the film community. He co-founded TriBeCa Productions in 1989 with producer Jane Rosenthal. They also established the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 to celebrate cinema. His impact on American culture is immense and widely recognized by experts.

To achieve such high levels of realism, De Niro uses specific acting techniques. He studied at several famous institutions, including the Stella Adler Conservatory. There, he was exposed to the Stanislavski system, a method used to create believable characters. This training allows him to transform his appearance and behavior for a role. For example, in the film Taxi Driver, he lost 30 pounds to fit the character. He also spent time with U.S. army personnel to learn specific accents and mannerisms. Such deep preparation helps him inhabit a person's life rather than just playing them.

De Niro's career is defined by several distinct types of performances. He is famous for dramatic roles in films like Mean Streets and Goodfellas. In these movies, he often portrays complex or intense characters. He also excels in comedic roles, such as his appearances in the Meet the Parents series. Some of his work is biographical, meaning it tells the true story of a real person. In Raging Bull, he played the boxer Jake LaMotta. In The Wizard of Lies, he portrayed the financier Bernie Madoff on television. This versatility allows him to move easily between different genres of storytelling.

His journey began in Manhattan, New York City, where he was born on August 17, 1943.
