Rachel had a very specific way of performing her roles. Most actors in the nineteenth century used big, exaggerated movements. Rachel chose a different path with her acting style. She used clear diction, which means her speech was very easy to understand. She also used an economy of gesture. This means she used small, careful movements instead of large ones. This helped her acting feel more real and powerful to the audience.

Her journey to fame began a long time ago. She was born Elisa-Rachel Félix on February 28, 1821. Her family had a Swiss Jewish background. Her father was a peddler and her mother dealt in second-hand clothes. As a young child, she earned money by singing and reciting in the streets. In 1830, she moved to Paris to become an actress. She studied very hard under teachers like Alexandre-Étienne Choron.

Rachel became a star very quickly after her debut in 1837. At just 17 years old, she starred in a play by Pierre Corneille. Her fame spread across Europe as she toured many different places. She performed in London, Brussels, Berlin, and Saint Petersburg. She even traveled to the United States and Cuba.
