She was a very talented performer who could bring many different types of people to life on screen. People loved her because she had a natural and earthy way of acting. She was also a writer who published two best-selling books in France. One was her memoir, titled Nostalgia Isn't What It Used to Be. The other was a novel called Adieu Volodya, which told stories about Jewish immigrants. Her work as an actress and a writer showed her great skill and intelligence.

Her life as an actress followed a path of hard work and big successes. In the early 1940s, she began appearing in small bit parts in films. She worked hard to earn enough money to support her mother and two brothers. To help keep her family safe, she used her mother's maiden name, Signoret, for her acting career. This helped hide her Jewish roots during a very difficult time in France. Later, she became a star in many famous movies. She often played strong or complex characters that stayed in people's minds for a long time.

Simone's story began in Wiesbaden, Germany, where she was born in 1921. Her parents were André Kaminker and Georgette Signoret. Her father was a French-born army officer who worked for the League of Nations. He eventually moved the family to Neuilly-sur-Seine, which is near Paris. Simone grew up in an intellectual home and studied many subjects like English and Latin. She was the eldest of three children. Her childhood was shaped by her family's history and the many languages they spoke.

Throughout her career, Simone won many of the most important prizes in movies.

In 1958, she starred in an English film called Room at the Top. This role was a huge success and won her an Academy Award for Best Actress. She also won the Best Female Performance Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Other big awards included three BAFTA Awards and a César Award in France. She even won a Primetime Emmy Award for her work on television. These prizes proved she was one of the best actresses of her time.

Simone's life was full of connections to art, people, and important causes. She married the famous actor Yves Montand in 1951, and they stayed together until she died. The two of them were very active in humanitarian and political causes. Simone also cared deeply about Jewish causes and helped support many different movements. Her influence even reached the world of music, as the singer Nina Simone took her stage name. Simone passed away in 1985 at the age of 64. She is buried in the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
