She spent fifty years acting in movies and on stage. People loved watching her because she felt real and honest. She did not try to act like a perfect or fancy star. Acting was a big transformation for her. She believed an actor should change into any role. She might play a duchess or a kitchen worker. She once played a judge, a lawyer, and a taxi driver. She even acted as a cop and a surgeon. This helped her avoid being stuck in just one type of role. She wanted to show many different sides of being a woman. This skill made her a very respected artist.

Her career began with training and early success. She graduated from the Conservatoire de la rue Blanche in 1954. She won two First Prizes in Modern and Classical Comedy there. After that, she joined the Comédie Française to act on stage. Her first movie was in a film called Thirteen at the Table in 1955. A famous writer named Jean Cocteau praised her talent very highly. He called her a great dramatic talent in the postwar period.

During the 1970s, she became a massive star in France.

She also won a Molière Award for her work on stage. One of her biggest hits was the film To Die of Love. Between 1967 and 1980, twenty-four of her films were huge successes.

Even when things were hard, she never gave up. Her career had some quiet years in the 1980s. She faced sadness and a show that did not do well. However, she had a great comeback in the 1990s. She won another César Award for the film Les Misérables in 1996. Today, many people in France remember her work. Seventeen different towns have even named streets after her.
