Alexander was a famous leader from the land of Macedon. Curtius Rufus wrote about Alexander's many conquests and his big ambitions. Even though his name is famous, we do not know much about his life. He is a bit of a mystery to people today. No other ancient books mention him or his writing. This makes his work very unique in Roman history.

We do not know exactly when he lived or who he was. Some experts think he might have had a different secret identity. One idea is that he died before his book was even published. A man named Peter Pratt suggested the book was kept hidden by emperors. This might be because the stories were too political for the time. The book tells of rebellions and how leaders take power. These topics could be sensitive for the Roman leaders in charge. Some think the book was finally released around 167 AD.

Scholars use clues inside the book to guess his dates. Curtius mentions the Roman Empire and its peace. He also writes about the Parthian Empire, which existed from 247 BC to 224 AD. One clue mentions a time when a new emperor was quickly chosen. This might refer to the night in January 41 AD. That was after the death of the leader Caligula. After that, the man named Claudius became the emperor. Most modern scholars believe he wrote in the middle or late first century AD. This helps us place him in the right part of history.

There is a possibility that Curtius Rufus was a Roman leader. He might have been a consul in the year 43 AD. A consul was a very important person in the Roman government. This man served under the emperor Claudius. Some records suggest he might have even come from a humble background. The emperor Tiberius once called him a self-made man. This means he worked hard to reach a high status. He may have studied in the great Library of Alexandria. This library would have given him many facts to use.

Today, we read his work through many old copies called codices. There are 123 of these surviving manuscripts in the world. However, the original ten books are not all here. Books I and II are completely missing from our records. There are also gaps in Books V, VI, and X. Even so, his stories were very popular in the Middle Ages. People wrote poems and made art based on his tales. Painters like Paolo Veronese even made art from his writing. His work helped shape how people imagined the ancient world.
