Vitruvius was a famous Roman architect and engineer from the 1st century BC.

He is best known for writing a massive work called "De architectura," or "The Ten Books on Architecture." This book is very special because it is the only major book on architecture from ancient times that still exists today. Vitruvius believed that all buildings should follow three important rules. He called these the Vitruvian virtues: strength, utility, and beauty.

These ideas helped people understand how to make structures that last and look wonderful. His work even helped people learn how sound moves in theaters. Architects today still look back at his ideas to understand the history of building.

To build well, Vitruvius said we should look at nature for clues. He noted that birds and bees build nests to find shelter from the weather. Humans do something similar by using natural materials to make homes. He also studied how the human body has perfect proportions. This idea led to the famous "Vitruvian Man" drawing by Leonardo da Vinci.

That drawing shows a man inside a circle and a square. Vitruvius believed these shapes were part of the order of the universe. By using math and nature, builders can create much better spaces.

Before he was a famous writer, Vitruvius served in the Roman army. He worked as an artilleryman and a military engineer. This was a hard job that involved building machines for sieges. He specialized in making machines called the ballista and the scorpio.

These machines were used during many battles and sieges in places like Gaul and North Africa. He may have even worked alongside the chief engineer of Julius Caesar. His military skills helped him understand how to build strong and useful things. This practical experience likely helped him write his great book on architecture.

We do not know much about Vitruvius's early life or his full name. Some people think his name was Marcus Vitruvius Pollio. He lived during a time of great change in Rome. He dedicated his book to the emperor Augustus to share his knowledge.

One building he is known to have supervised was a basilica in Fano.

Scientists recently found the foundations of this building in Italy. Even though he was not famous during his own life, his words survived through many handwritten copies. This helped his ideas reach people hundreds of years later.

Vitruvius's ideas changed the way people built things in Europe. During the Renaissance, many famous artists studied his books. Architects like Michelangelo and Palladio used his rules for their own work.

His work was even printed in many languages like English, French, and Spanish. He is often called the "Father of all true Architects." Even though he lived a long time ago, his lessons about beauty and strength still matter. We see his influence every time we walk into a well-built building today.
