This language family began in central Peru. It spread across the Andes mountains long ago. The Inca Empire used Quechua as its main language. Even before the Inca, many people spoke it.

Quechua is not just one single language. It has many different parts. These parts are called dialects. Some dialects are very different from each other. Because of this, it is called a language family. One group is called Quechua I. It is spoken in central Peru. Another group is Quechua II. This group includes Kichwa, which is spoken in Ecuador.

Many countries now recognize Quechua. Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia all call it an official language. People use it in schools and on the radio. Some people even write books and theses in Quechua.

This helps keep the language alive for the future.
