It is spoken by many people in Mexico. Most speakers live in the highlands of Michoacán. Some live near Lake Pátzcuaro. Others live near the Parícutin volcano.

This language is very unique. It is a language isolate. This means it is not related to any other known language. Long ago, it was the main language of the Purépecha Empire. The empire was very strong. In the 1400s, it reached the Pacific Coast. It even reached parts of the state of Guanajuato.

People have written in Purépecha for a long time. In the 1500s, people used the Latin script to write it.

They made dictionaries and grammar books. This helped keep the language alive.

Today, some schools teach Purépecha and Spanish together. This helps children learn both. The number of speakers is growing. However, many people now speak both Spanish and Purépecha. This makes the language endangered. Mexico now calls it a national language. This gives it a special status in the country.
