Many foreign traders knew the city by its Arabic name, Zaiton. It was a major starting point for the Maritime Silk Road. This path helped move goods across the ocean. During the Song dynasty, the city grew into a huge international port. It was even bigger than the port at Guangzhou for a time. The city's many industries included making salt, sugar, and beautiful ceramics.

Famous travelers from long ago visited this busy city.

Marco Polo called it one of the greatest havens for trade in the world. He even called it the "Alexandria of the East." Another traveler named Ibn Battuta said it was the greatest port in the world. These men saw how many different people lived there. Merchants came from places like Arabia, Iran, India, and Japan. They brought valuable items like pepper, spices, gems, and pearls to sell.

Because so many people visited, the city became a mix of many cultures.

You could find many different types of religious buildings in one place. There were Buddhist and Hindu temples for many people. There were also Islamic mosques and Christian churches. Some even found Franciscan friaries and a Catholic cathedral. This mix of different faiths made the city very special. In 2021, UNESCO named it a World Heritage site because of this unique history.

Today, Quanzhou is a very large metropolitan region.

As of the 2020 census, over 8 million people live in the area. The city is made of several urban districts and smaller cities. It is home to many people in places like Jinjiang and Nan'an. Even though the harbor changed over time, the city remains important. It connects the history of the old Silk Road to the modern world. The city still holds many old things for people to find and study.
