People in Bangladesh often call him Potua. This is a name used for folk artists. He was special because he mixed old folk styles with modern ideas. He used a style called Cubism in his work. He also loved using bright primary colors. Most of his paintings showed the lives of people in the lower classes. He wanted to show their real world through his art.

His way of making art was very interesting. He looked at old pata paintings for inspiration. These are traditional folk paintings that are often flat. Hassan tried to add a sense of depth to his work. He used different colors on one plane to show distance. This helped create a sense of height in his images. He learned this color technique from an artist named Henri Matisse. He worked with many tools like oil, watercolor, and woodcuts.

He enrolled in the Government Institute of Arts in 1938. He even had to pay for his own school fees. He finished his six-year course in nine years because he was so busy. He also joined the Bratachari movement and played sports.

History changed his life many times. After the partition of India, he moved to Dhaka. During the 1971 war, he used his art to help his country. He made posters with scary faces to inspire freedom fighters. He even helped design important symbols for the new nation. These included signs for the Bangladesh Bank and Biman Bangladesh Airlines. He also helped start the Government Institute of Fine Arts in 1948. He worked with another artist named Zainul Abedin.
