Qiyas is a way to find answers to new questions. Many Sunni Muslims use it to make laws. They look at the Quran and the Sunnah. The Sunnah is what the Prophet said and did.

To use qiyas, a person needs three things. First, there is a new problem. The holy books do not give a clear rule for it. Second, there is an old case with a known rule. Third, both cases must share a reason. This reason is called an 'illah.

For example, there is a rule about Friday prayers. It says people should not buy or sell goods then. Some use qiyas to say this applies to other work too. This is because they see a shared reason.

Not all people agree on this way of thinking. Some early scholars, like Ahmad ibn Hanbal, rejected it. They thought people should only use holy words. They did not want people to use personal opinions.

Other groups, like the Shi’a, also have different views. Some believe in using the intellect instead. Others feel that only a special teacher can give the truth.
