math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A pyeong is a way to measure floor space. It is used in Korea. People also use it in Taiwan. In Japan, a similar unit is called a tsubo. This unit tells you how big a room is.

In Korea, an average house is about 25 pyeong. A small studio apartment is 8 to 12 pyeong. A tiny attic is only 1.5 pyeong. One pyeong is about 3.3058 square meters.

South Korea made laws to stop using this unit. They banned it in 1961. They also banned using it for business in 2007. Still, people use it in their daily lives. They use it to talk about homes. Websites often show the size in square meters. They also show the pyeong size.

In Japan, people use mats called tatami. One tsubo is the size of two tatami mats. A standard tatami mat is about 1.653 square meters. This makes a tsubo about 3.306 square meters. In Taiwan, the ping is also about 3.305 square meters. Most people in China use square meters instead.
