It is a classic part of the British seaside. The show features Mr. Punch and his wife, Judy. The performance is a series of short, fast scenes. In each scene, Punch interacts with another character. He is an anarchic character who uses a large stick. This stick is called a slapstick. He uses it to play tricks on everyone he meets.

The show brings people together through laughter and surprise.

A single performer works inside a small booth. This person is called a professor or a punchman. Sometimes they have an assistant called a bottler. The bottler helps gather the crowd outside the booth. They also collect money, which is called "the bottle." A bottler might play a drum or a guitar. They might even talk back to the puppets. This helps the audience understand the funny story.

In the Victorian era, pan pipes were also used for music.

The show has roots in 17th-century Italian theater. This style was called commedia dell'arte. The character of Punch comes from an Italian character named Pulcinella. This name was changed to Punchinello in England. The first recorded show in England was on May 9, 1662.

This date is often called Punch's UK birthday. The show grew during the Restoration Period. This was a time when King Charles II took the throne in 1660. Theater culture grew very fast during this period.

Early shows used marionettes, which are puppets on strings. Later, performers switched to glove puppets. These are easier to move quickly without strings getting in the way. To move them, a puppeteer puts a finger in each part. They use the thumb for one arm and other fingers for the rest.

Punch has a very special, squeaky voice. The professor uses a tool called a swazzle in his mouth. This makes him sound like a kazoo. Judy's name was chosen because it was easier to say with the swazzle.
