A pantomime, or "panto," is a musical comedy stage show made for families.

These shows use broad humor and funny costumes to tell stories. Most pantos are based on well-known fairy tales, fables, or folk tales.

One special thing about panto is that the audience joins in. People are expected to sing along with the music. They also shout out phrases to the actors on stage. This makes the theater feel like a big, shared party.

In the past, pantomime was often a silent performance.

Actors used their bodies to tell the whole story. They relied on masks, specific poses, and hand gestures. This hand-language was so detailed it was like a mouth. The dancers would wear a long silk tunic and a mantle. A singer or a chorus provided the words for the story. Music often came from a flute and a metal shoe. This shoe, called a scabellum, helped keep the beat for the dancer.

The roots of pantomime reach back to ancient times. The word comes from the Greek word "pantomimos." This means a dancer who acts out all the roles.

In Ancient Rome, these shows were very popular for many centuries. A single male dancer would perform myths or legends. Famous dancers in Italy even had followers who wore special badges. These followers would sometimes fight in the streets with rival groups. While some people loved the art, others looked down on the dancers. Many of these performers were actually slaves or freedmen.

English pantomime grew from many different traditions over time. It was influenced by the Italian commedia dell'arte.

This featured the character Harlequin as a romantic lead. He would often run away with his lover, Columbine. They were chased by a father and comic servants. Later, a bumbling policeman was added to the chase scenes.

By the early 1800s, pantomimes changed to include more fairy tales.

They also used "slapstick" comedy to make people laugh. Many shows had dual titles to describe the fun. They might name both the main story and the harlequinade. Today, these shows remain a huge part of the holiday season.
