The pumpkinseed is a small and colorful freshwater fish.

It belongs to the sunfish family and lives in North America. This fish gets its name from its body shape. Its shape looks very much like a pumpkin seed. You might see colors like orange, green, yellow, or blue on its scales. A bright red spot sits on its black ear flap. This spot is a special mark for this species.

Many people call it a sun perch or a common sunfish.

This fish has many clever ways to stay safe. It has sharp spines on its fins for defense. It also uses a trick to look much larger. A dark patch on its gill cover acts like an eye spot. This makes the fish look four times bigger than it really is. When a predator comes near, the fish flares its gills. This shows off its bright colors to scare others away.

The fish also uses a lateral line system to feel movement in the water.

In the spring, male pumpkinseeds begin a busy way of life. They build nests in shallow water on sand or gravel. The males use their fins to sweep out small, oval holes. They use their mouths to clear away rocks and debris. These nests often grow in large groups called colonies. After the female lays her eggs, the male stays to guard them. He protects the babies for about 11 days.

Pumpkinseeds live in many different places. They are native to eastern North America. They can be found from Canada down to South Carolina. They also live in places like Iowa and Pennsylvania. Some have been moved to the Pacific Coast near Oregon and Washington. In Europe, these fish are considered an invasive species. This means they can outcompete the fish that already live there.

Because of this, they are on a special concern list in the European Union.

Finding a pumpkinseed is often easy for people. They like to live in warm, calm lakes and ponds. They stay near the shore where there is plenty of plants. They eat many things like insects, worms, and small frogs. Some even eat tiny snails by using strong jaw muscles. Many young fishers enjoy catching them because they are easy to find.
