The bowfin is a very special fish from North America.

Some people call it a "living fossil." This is because it has kept many traits from its early ancestors. These fish belong to a group called Halecomorphi. This group first appeared about 250 million years ago during the Early Triassic period. Today, the bowfin is one of only two surviving species in its group.

Its closest living relatives are called gars. Together, they belong to a group called Holostei.

Bowfins have a very clever way to breathe.

Amia Gas Bladder

Most fish only use gills to take oxygen from the water. The bowfin is a bimodal breather, which means it can use both water and air. It has a gas bladder to help it float. A small tube called a pneumatic duct connects this bladder to its throat. This allows the fish to gulp air at the surface. This trick helps them survive in water with very little oxygen.

This is called aquatic hypoxia, and it can be deadly to other fish.

These fish are skilled hunters that like to hide and wait.

They are ambush predators that stalk their prey. They often move into shallow water at night to hunt. They eat other fish and small creatures like crawfish or insects. Their mouths have two sets of teeth to help them eat. One set of large, sharp teeth is used to grab prey. They also have pharyngeal tooth patches in their throat. These throat teeth help them grind up and sort their food.

Scientists have learned a lot about how a bowfin is built.

Their long dorsal fin has between 145 and 250 rays. Their skull is made of 28 fused bones. This structure is called the dermatocranium. They also have a bony plate under their head called a gular plate.

You can find them in the eastern United States and southern Canada. They live in places like the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. They prefer slow waters like swamps, lakes, and rivers.

It is easy to mistake a bowfin for other fish.

Some people confuse them with the northern snakehead. However, snakeheads are an invasive species from Asia and Russia. You can tell them apart because bowfins have a dark eyespot on their tail. This eyespot might confuse predators by making them attack the tail instead of the head. Another similar fish is the burbot, which has a flat head. Bowfins are unique because they can live for up to 33 years. They are truly amazing survivors of a very old time.
