Scientists call it a "living fossil." This is because it looks like its early ancestors. These fish first appeared 250 million years ago.

Today, they live in North America. You can find them in the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. They like to stay in swamps and slow rivers.

Bowfins have a special way to breathe. They use gills to take oxygen from the water. But they can also gulp air from the surface.

Amia Gas Bladder

They do this using a gas bladder. This is a small part inside their body. A tiny tube connects the bladder to their throat. This helps them live when water has very little oxygen.

These fish are hunters. They eat other fish and small creatures like crawfish. They have sharp teeth to grab their food. They also have special teeth in their throat. These teeth help grind up food. Bowfins can live for up to 33 years. They can grow quite large, too.
