Public library

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A public library is a special place for everyone in a community. Most of these libraries are lending libraries. This means you can borrow books to take home for a short time. Public libraries are usually funded by taxes. Because they use tax money, they do not charge people to use the books. Librarians and other staff members run these buildings. They are often civil servants who help the public.

Libraries offer many free services to help people learn. They have quiet areas for students to study. Some libraries even hold story times for small children. You can also find computers and the internet there. They help people of all ages find the information they need.

Libraries have a very long and interesting history. The very first libraries held clay tablets with writing on them. These were found in temple rooms in Sumer. These tablets date back to 2600 BC. They were mostly lists of trade or inventories.

In Ancient Egypt, people kept records on papyrus. In the Persian Empire, libraries served two main jobs. They kept government records like budgets and orders. They also kept collections of science, history, and math. This helped the empire run smoothly. Even in the Roman Empire, people had access to scrolls in public baths.

As time went on, libraries changed how they worked. In the 1700s, people started circulating libraries. These were run by booksellers and publishers to make a profit. You had to pay a subscription fee to use them. These fees could be for a month, a quarter, or a year.

This helped people who could not afford to buy books. The first circulating library was started in 1725 by Allan Ramsay. It was located in Edinburgh, Scotland. These libraries often sold books or other goods too. This helped them earn enough money to stay open.

Many famous libraries were built many years ago. The Malatestiana Library in Italy is a very special one. It was established in 1447 by Malatesta Novello. It was the first community-run library in Europe.

Modern libraries are very different from the old chained libraries. Long ago, many libraries kept books on metal chains. This was so people could not take them away.
