Public library

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A public library is a community institution designed for the general public. Most public libraries function as lending libraries. This means patrons can borrow materials to use outside the building for a set period. These libraries are typically funded by public sources like taxes. Because they are tax-supported, they do not charge money for access to their collections. Librarians and library paraprofessionals manage these spaces. These workers are often civil servants who serve the community.

Public libraries serve a specific mandate. They aim to meet the information needs of the general public. This makes them distinct from other types of libraries. Research libraries serve specific scholars. School libraries serve students and teachers. Academic libraries serve universities. Public libraries are unique because they are open to everyone. They provide services like preschool story times to help children learn to read early. They also offer quiet study areas for professionals and students. Many libraries foster book clubs to encourage a love of literature.

Modern libraries are the result of many technological and social changes. Advances in the printing press, moveable type, and paper helped libraries grow. New ways to make ink and distribute books also played a role. At the same time, the middle class grew and literacy rates increased. This created a massive demand for information. Libraries also provide modern tools like computer and internet access. They help people navigate a world full of data.

History shows that the desire for shared knowledge is very old. The first libraries were archives of writing. In Sumer, some clay tablets in cuneiform script date back to 2600 BC. These were found in temple rooms. They mostly contained commercial transactions or inventories. This marked the transition from prehistory to history. In Ancient Egypt, similar records were kept on papyrus. In the Achaemenid Empire of Persia, libraries served two main roles. They kept administrative documents like budgets and government orders. They also collected resources on science, history, and philosophy.

Public access to books appeared in several ancient places. The first major public library is said to have been established in Athens by Pisistratus. By the 1st century BC, public libraries existed in the Roman Empire. The Fatimid Caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah once established libraries where anyone could choose books for free. In Europe, the Malatestiana Library in Italy is a landmark. Commissioned by Malatesta Novello, it was established in 1447. It was the first community-run public library in Europe. It was a "chained library." This meant manuscripts were fixed to desks with metal chains. People could consult them on-site but could not borrow them.

During the 18th century, libraries began to change again. They moved from closed collections to circulating libraries. Circulating libraries were often businesses run by booksellers. They provided a way to make a profit through subscription fees. Patrons could pay for a month, a quarter, or a year to borrow books. The first such library was started in 1725 by Allan Ramsay in Edinburgh, Scotland. These libraries were very popular and helped people who could not afford to buy books. However, some upper-class people looked down on them. They felt these libraries sold material that was not sophisticated enough.

Many important libraries were founded during the 17th century. In England, Chetham's Library in Manchester opened in 1653. It claims to be the oldest public library in the English-speaking world. In the Americas, the Biblioteca Palafoxiana was founded in 1646. Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza donated 5,000 books to start it. Today, it holds between 41,000 and 45,000 volumes. It is recognized by UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. These institutions show how libraries have evolved. They have moved from guarding precious records to serving the needs of every citizen.
