Pronghorns are built for speed. They are the fastest land mammals in the Americas. They can run up to 55 miles per hour. They can keep this speed for a long time. To help them run, they have big hearts and lungs. They also have light bones and hollow hair. Their hooves have soft parts to absorb shock.

These animals have unique horns. The horns have a bony core. A skin layer grows over the core to make a sheath. This sheath is shed and regrown every year. Males have horns with a small branch called a tine.

Pronghorns use smell to stay safe. When they are scared, white hair on their rump stands up. This shows scent glands. These glands let out a smell like buttered popcorn. This smell warns other animals that danger is near.
