It has long, spiral horns. These horns have two or three twists. Both males and females have these curly horns.

Addax have coats that change with the seasons. In winter, their hair is greyish-brown. This helps them stay warm. In summer, their coat turns white or sandy blonde. This light color reflects heat to keep them cool.

Living in the desert is hard. But the addax is built for it. They can live without water for a long time. They get moisture from the food they eat and from dew on plants. Scientists think they have a special lining in their stomachs. This lining may store water in pouches.

These animals live in herds of five to 20 members. One strong male usually leads the group. Today, the addax is critically endangered. This means they are at risk of disappearing forever. Fewer than 500 addax live in the wild. They are mostly found in Niger, Chad, and Mauritania.
