Oryxes are a group of four large antelope species. They live in dry, desert areas. Most oryxes have pale fur with dark marks. Their long horns are straight and thin. One kind is called the scimitar oryx. Its horns curve back like a curved sword.

These animals are very tough. They can go a long time without drinking water. They often live in large herds. A herd can have up to 600 animals. Even tiny babies can run with the group right after they are born.

Some oryxes almost disappeared. The Arabian oryx was once extinct in the wild. This means no groups lived in nature. People helped by using a captive-breeding program. This is a way to grow animals in safe places. They then put the animals back into the wild. Now, over 1,000 Arabian oryxes live in the wild. In the United States, gemsbok live in New Mexico. They were first let go there in the late 1960s. They found plenty of food to eat.
