A promise is a commitment to do or not do something in the future.

When someone makes a promise, they are showing their intent to act in a certain way. The person who makes the promise is called the promisor. The person receiving the promise is known as the promisee.

Promises can feel very good because they offer security. However, they can also cause stress if the promise is hard to verify. Some people even view a promise as a type of debt that must be paid.

In the world of law, promises can become binding contracts.

A contract usually starts with an offer and an acceptance. An offerer makes a proposal to another person, called the offeree. Once the offeree accepts the terms, a legal obligation is created. If one person fails to do what they promised, it is called a breach of contract. The person who broke the promise may have to pay money to the other person. This money is meant to put the second person in the same position they would have been in if the deal worked.

Many different types of promises exist in our daily lives. Some are very solemn, like marriage vows or military oaths.

There are also election promises made by people running for office. These are pledges that might change later due to politics and compromise. Some people even talk about fairy tale promises that must be honored. In sociology, some thinkers believe society makes a big promise to us. They use the American Dream as a famous example of this idea.

Religions around the world have special views on promises. In Christian theology, some see the Holy Spirit as a fulfilled promise from Jesus. Some Christian groups, like the Mennonites, choose not to take oaths or affirmations. They believe all promises are witnessed by God. In Islam, the Quran says Muslims should not break their promises. Allah is seen as the witness and guarantor of every promise. If a Muslim breaks an oath, they may need to ask for forgiveness. They might also feed ten poor people or fast for three days to make up for it.

Philosophers have spent a long time studying the rules of promises. Immanuel Kant believed that people should always keep their promises. Other thinkers, called consequentialists, argue that breaking a promise might be okay if it helps more people. In 2008, Iain King suggested a middle ground for making good decisions. He said a promise should be kept unless a new, unexpected situation arises that is more important. This shows that deciding whether to keep a promise can be a very hard job. People must use good judgment to find the best path for everyone involved.
