Proganochelys was a very early relative of modern turtles.

It is known as a stem-turtle. This means it is an ancestor-like relative in the turtle family tree. For a long time, people thought it was the oldest turtle ever.

This changed in 2008 when scientists found Odontochelys. Odontochelys lived even earlier in the Triassic period. Even so, Proganochelys is still a very important animal to study. It helps us see how turtles changed over millions of years. Its name comes from Greek words meaning "before brightness turtle."

This animal had a very special way of staying safe.

It had a hard shell made of bony plates and ribs. These parts fused together to form a solid cage. This cage protected its important internal organs from danger. Unlike the turtles we see today, it could not pull its head inside. Its neck might have had small spines for extra protection. It also had a very long tail with spikes. This tail ended in a heavy club. Scientists think it used this club to fight off predators.

People first learned about this creature through fossil discoveries.

Georg Baur named the genus in 1887. He was a scientist who studied these ancient remains. Most fossils were found in Germany in places like Trossingen. Some fossils were also found in the Klettgau Formation in Switzerland. These rocks are very old. They come from the late Triassic period. This was about 210 million years ago.

We can learn a lot from the size and shape of its bones.

Proganochelys was about 1 meter long. It was a herbivore, which means it ate plants. It did not have teeth in its jaws like many other animals. Instead, it likely had a beak to crush its food. It did have tiny tooth-like structures on the roof of its mouth. This change from teeth to a beak helped it eat plants more easily. This shows how early turtles were changing their bodies to survive.

Scientists still debate exactly where this turtle lived.

Some think it lived on land like a tortoise. Other experts believe it lived in fresh water. They look at its limbs to find clues. Turtles with long limbs are often swimmers. Turtles with short hands are often land dwellers. A study from 2024 suggested it might have lived in water. This helps us picture the world as it was millions of years ago.
