Proganochelys is an extinct genus of primitive stem-turtle.

A stem-turtle is a relative that sits on the evolutionary line leading to modern turtles. For over a century, scientists believed this was the oldest turtle in existence. This changed in 2008 with the discovery of Odontochelys and Eorhynchochelys. These two genera lived during the Carnian stage of the Triassic, making them even older. Despite this, Proganochelys remains a vital subject for understanding turtle evolution. Its name is derived from Greek words meaning "before brightness turtle."

The anatomy of Proganochelys shows a mix of modern and ancient features. It possessed a fully developed shell consisting of a carapace and a plastron. The carapace is the top part of the shell, while the plastron is the bottom. This shell was formed by bony plates and ribs that fused into a solid cage. This cage protected the animal's internal organs from predators. The ribs showed a process called metaplastic ossification of the dermis. This means the ribs grew through a specific type of bone development in the skin.

Proganochelys had several unique physical traits that set it apart from modern species. It could not retract its head into its shell like many turtles today. Instead, its neck may have been protected by small spines. Its tail was notably long and featured spikes. The tail ended in a heavy club, which scientists hypothesize was used for defense.

The skull also retained many primitive amniote features. These included the lacrimal bone, the supratemporal bone, and the lacrimal duct. These structures are typically lost in more advanced turtle lineages.

The diet and mouth structure of Proganochelys provide clues about its evolution. The animal was likely a herbivore, meaning it ate plants. It lacked teeth in its upper and lower jaws. Instead, it likely possessed a beak to help crush vegetation. However, it did have small tooth-like structures called denticles on its palate. These denticles were located on the vomer and the pterygoid bones. This transition from teeth to a beak suggests stem-turtles evolved from carnivorous ancestors to herbivorous ones.

Fossil evidence for Proganochelys comes from specific locations in Europe. The earliest fossils were discovered in Germany in towns like Halberstadt, Tübingen, and Trossingen. These remains were found in formations of shale, sandstone, and limestone. Geologists estimate these fossils date to the middle of the Norian stage. This places them at approximately 210 million years ago.

Additional fossils have been found in the Klettgau Formation of Switzerland. These discoveries help scientists map the presence of early turtles in the Late Triassic.

Scientists continue to debate the specific habitat of Proganochelys. Some researchers believe it was a purely terrestrial animal that lived on land. Others argue it lived in a semi-aquatic environment, such as freshwater. This debate often relies on studying the animal's limbs. Generally, turtles with long limbs are aquatic swimmers, while those with short hands are terrestrial. A 2024 study on shell biomechanics suggested an aquatic paleoecology.

This would mean the animal spent significant time in the water.

Proganochelys is classified within the group Testudinata. This group includes all living turtles as well as several extinct relatives. It is considered a monotypic genus, meaning it contains only one species: Proganochelys quenstedtii. The study of this genus helps scientists understand the rapid evolution of the turtle shell. For example, the 220-million-year-old Odontochelys only had a partial shell. The five-million-year difference between these two genera suggests that shell evolution occurred very quickly in geological time.
