Proganochelys was a very early type of turtle.

It lived about 210 million years ago. Scientists found its fossils in Germany and Switzerland.

This animal was about 1 meter long. It was a herbivore, which means it ate plants. It did not have teeth in its jaws. Instead, it had a beak to crush food. It did have tiny tooth-like parts on its palate. The palate is the roof of the mouth.

Its shell was very strong. It was made of bony plates and ribs. These parts fused into a solid cage. This cage protected its internal organs. Unlike modern turtles, it could not pull its head into its shell. Its long tail had spikes and ended in a club. It may have used the club to stay safe. Some experts think it lived near fresh water. Others think it lived on land.

This turtle is a stem-turtle. This means it is a very early relative of modern turtles.
