Meiolania was a very large and unusual type of extinct turtle.

These animals lived in the Australasia region for a long time. This area included places like Australia, New Caledonia, and Fiji.

They were very well-armored creatures. Their shells had raised edges with sharp spikes. Their front limbs were covered in hard plates called osteoderms.

Even their tails were protected by rings of spikes. The tail ended in a large, bony club. These features likely helped them defend themselves from danger. Some scientists think they also used these tools for fighting during mating season.

Many of these body parts had helpful jobs for daily life. The massive, cow-like horns on their heads were very special. These horns might have helped the turtles while they were foraging. They could brush aside thick plants to reach food.

Fossil evidence also tells us about where they lived. Scientists found fossil nests belonging to these turtles. Some fossils show they had ways to keep sand out of their noses. This suggests they spent time in dry areas or on sandy beaches.

Learning about Meiolania took a long time and involved many people. In the late 1800s, a scientist named Richard Owen first described them. At first, he thought they were a type of lizard. He even named them after a giant lizard called Megalania.

Later, other scientists like Thomas Henry Huxley realized they were actually turtles. This led to many different names and ideas about how they were related to modern animals. Researchers like Charles Anderson and Eugene S. Gaffney continued this work. They helped piece together the history of these amazing creatures.

There are many important facts about different species of Meiolania. The most famous one is called Meiolania platyceps. Many of its fossils were found on Lord Howe Island. Another species, Meiolania brevicollis, is the oldest one we know. It lived during the Miocene period in mainland Australia.

Some fossils were found in places like New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Scientists even found remains in Argentina that were once thought to be related. These discoveries help us map out where the turtles used to roam.

We still have big questions about why Meiolania disappeared. It is not fully understood how they moved between islands. Some people thought they might have swam, but they were likely too heavy for that.

They might have moved across a continent called Zealandia before it sank. Their extinction was likely caused by many things happening at once. Climate change and rising sea levels may have changed their homes. They also faced new challenges from humans and new animals. These changes eventually led to the end of these spiked turtles.
