Print on demand

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Most books are printed in large groups. Print on demand, or POD, is a different way. In POD, a company does not print a book until someone orders it.

This lets people order just one copy or a small group.

Before digital printing, making a few books was hard. It cost too much to use old tools. In the 1960s, photocopy machines helped make good copies. Later, computers could store text in digital form. This made it easier to print books quickly.

Many people use POD today. University presses use it to keep old books available. Some authors use it to self-publish. This means they publish their own work.

These authors can print and ship books themselves. They can also change their work easily. POD is often cheaper than other ways of printing. It helps writers reach readers without a big company. Some websites even help people sell printed things this way. It keeps many books in print forever.
