A presidential system is a way to organize a government. In this system, a leader called a president heads the executive branch. This branch is the group that carries out the laws of the land. The president is separate from the legislature, which is the group that makes the laws. This setup is known as the separation of powers.

Because the branches are separate, they can watch over each other. This can help make sure no single group gets too much power.

This system works through a clear division of duties. The president is often the head of state and the head of government. Citizens elect the president either directly or indirectly. This means the president does not get power from the legislature. The legislature cannot dismiss the president except in very special cases. The president may have many specific roles to perform. They might command the military or lead foreign policy. They can also use a veto to challenge new laws.

This way of governing has a long history. It grew from the early British colonies in North America. In the 1600s, the Pilgrims in Plymouth Colony used an independent executive branch. The first true presidential system was made in 1787. This happened during the United States Constitutional Convention. A man named James Wilson helped design the role of the president. He believed one leader would be easier for people to hold accountable. The United States became the first presidential republic in 1789. George Washington served as its very first president.

Many different countries use this system today. It is the most common form of government in the Americas. Many nations in Latin America modeled their rules after the United States. Brazil also adopted this system in 1889 with Deodoro da Fonseca. In Asia, the Philippines used it starting in 1898. Other countries like South Korea and Indonesia also use it. In Africa, many new republics used this system after decolonization. Even more recently, Turkey adopted a presidential system in 2018.

There are different ideas about whether this system is good. Some people say it is very efficient. A president can act quickly during a national emergency. They can make steady choices because they have a fixed term. However, other people worry about certain problems. Sometimes the president and the legislature disagree. This can cause gridlock, which makes it hard to pass laws. There is also a worry that too much power could lead to a dictatorship. A dictatorship is when one leader has total control.
